*Sumo Spotlight highlights Sumo Logic employees from around the globe. This spotlight features Julia Hoffmann, Senior Product and Privacy Counsel based in the Bay Area.*### Describe your role at Sumo Logic

I counsel my fellow Sumos on options to move forward with their plans. If you encounter anything regulatory (international laws, federal laws, state laws) regarding our product, data protection, and privacy, I am happy to help you choose a path.

I also love to provide answers to intellectual property questions and procurement issues. Find yourself in a project including individuals’ personal information? Want to work on a product but aren’t sure what the boundaries are, if any? Slack me! I love easy questions, so it’s never too early, or wrong, to contact me, for me to say, “Oh, this? This is totally cool.”

### What do you like most about your job?

What I like most about my role at Sumo Logic is the team – my fellow colleagues in the legal department are the best I’ve ever experienced. They have so much collective professional experience but are also warm-hearted people.

### What do you think is the best thing about Sumo Logic’s culture?

A willingness to put in the effort, and to listen with genuine goodwill. These are precious qualities.

### What parts of our mission or values do you most connect with?

Jumping in to be, and do, better – for other Sumos and the world. A great example of this is when Ramin, our CEO, sent the company a note about the Ukraine crisis and encouraged employees to check in with our colleagues in the region and get involved…and when he offered options to help.

### Why are regulatory laws so important to product development?

The government directly enforces regulatory laws – privacy or data protection among them. This means we are not dealing with another person, an individual, or a company, in a private matter but larger and general public issues. Of course, every legal conflict adds risk. But regulatory matters always have the added complication of authorities getting involved in Sumo Logic’s affairs.

### What did you do before coming to Sumo Logic?

Just prior to coming to Sumo I worked at a cloud platform provider for local services, where I led Product Counsel dealing with myriad privacy and technology challenges due to their touchpoints on both the business (B2B) and the consumer (B2C) side. This experience helped train me well for Sumo Logic as it gave me insights into ever-changing sophisticated technology and the need to carefully assess the company’s tailoring of services to customers.

### What have been your proudest accomplishments while at Sumo Logic?

One of the things I’m most proud of accomplishing at Sumo is getting us through international requirements that affect our agreements with customers – always a priority. We may be a US company, but we must abide by many laws because we provide our services worldwide.

In the European Union, recent reforms required Sumo to run a behind-the-scenes revamp of customer contacts. This affected all our business relationships, and so I put a ton of effort into the customer side in particular. I managed to provide a new data protection addendum with many months to spare. Phew!

*Julia showing off her love of travel and adventure*### Name a role model or person who inspires you

Michelle Obama! Lawyer, advocate, and former First Lady of the United States, she does it all with grace and drive.

### What do you like to do for fun outside work?

This is super nerdy, but I play Dungeons & Dragons with my friends. I also love hiking, which we really took up during the pandemic – while the pandemic is winding down now, I can’t stop hiking!

### What’s your favorite thing about working at Sumo?

Sumo Logic has a really friendly atmosphere. As a lawyer, colleagues can be intimated by working with the legal team, but it’s so heartening to know colleagues feel comfortable approaching our team.

### How have you grown professionally during your time at Sumo?

I’ve developed skills in a whole new area of business law, which can be rare mid-career and is most valuable.

### Share one thing that your co-workers don’t know about you.

I’m a genre novel fiend – ask me for a recommendation for fantasy or science fiction specifically catering to your tastes, and I’ll recommend a book to you that you’ll likely enjoy.

Want to join our team? Sumo Logic is hiring around the globe! [Check out our current openings](https://www.sumologic.com/company/careers/).
