It is safe to say that customers and enterprises have come to expect their digital experiences to be near instantaneous. Fifty three percent of consumers will wait no more than [three seconds](https://www.blog.google/products/admanager/the-need-for-mobile-speed/) for a web page to render before abandoning the site. But new technologies, like connected vehicles, AR/VR, and industrial automation, are pushing the limits of what traditional architecture can handle when it comes to delivering ultra-low latency. These applications sometimes require single-digit millisecond latency, but hopping across multiple networks to reach the datacenter and back can often exceed tens of milliseconds. Verizon 5G Edge is positioned to support these exact use cases, by embedding application servers within the service provider network.

But just as important as achieving low-latency, these systems need to be observable. Sumo Logic’s cloud-native analytics platform ensures engineers have access to all the telemetry required to operationalize these applications to minimize downtime, and improve performance.

### Challenges of monitoring Verizon 5G edge applications

AWS and Verizon recommend running these applications in a hub and spoke model with latency-sensitive components at the Edge, or Wavelength Zone, and shared or persistent state components like databases at the parent Region. But with distributed system components, it can be difficult to get a holistic view of the application’s health. Data can easily get siloed, and it can be tricky to access real-time telemetry across the Availability Zones and Wavelength Zones. In addition, siloed data impairs troubleshooting and slows down root cause analysis. If data about the reliability of your application infrastructure is not easily accessible and cannot be trusted then it can quickly stand in the way of efficient problem resolution.

### Monitoring resources in Wavelength Zones

In order to help tackle visibility issues tied to edge applications, we have a community-developed Cloud Formation template that automatically sets up resource monitoring of your AWS EC2 virtual machines in a Wavelength Zone. Once data starts streaming, you can instantly get insights into the state and health of services.
