Sumo Logic Receives High GDPR Readiness Rating from Netskope

Netskope’s Evaluation of Company’s GDPR Readiness Makes It Well-Positioned to Protect the Data of Global Customers

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. -- Dec. 6, 2017 -- Sumo Logic, the leading cloud-native, machine data analytics platform that delivers continuous intelligence, today announced that Netskope, the leader in cloud security, has completed an evaluation of the company’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) Readiness and determined that it has achieved the highest of any SaaS-based company tested for GDPR compliance preparedness. This evaluation from Netskope indicates that Sumo Logic is significantly ahead in terms of GDPR readiness, and well-positioned to protect the data of its global customer base of over 1,500 organizations.

“In working with countless organizations to advise on their GDPR readiness in advance of the May 2018 deadline, we’ve found that one of the biggest problem areas was in the cloud. While most modern businesses are either fully migrated into the cloud or running on a hybrid model, many employees are taking advantage of the benefits of cloud flexibility by using unsanctioned -- and possibly risky -- cloud apps and services in order to get their jobs done,” said Amol Kabe, vice president of product management at Netskope. “Sumo Logic is an exception to this case. They are taking are a number of steps to not only protect their machine data analytics platform, but also ensure due diligence that vendors they’re working with will be GDPR compliant, setting the industry standard for how to do GDPR compliance right.”

GDPR is a regulation intended to improve data protections within the European Union (EU). The goal is to give citizens greater control over their personal data, and make data handling regulations consistent across the EU’s 28 member states. GDPR implements a number of measures to enhance protection of personal data, including right to erasure, privacy by design, hiring data protection officers and rapid breach notification. Although the GDPR measures are to be enforced within the EU, its scope extends to international companies that process data within the union, meaning any organization that does business with certain European countries must also maintain compliance. Failure to comply with GDPR regulations in advance of the May 25, 2018 deadline can result in warnings, audits and even fines of up to 20 million Euros.

“Security has been at the core of the Sumo Logic platform since day one. With compliance and privacy a key component in all aspects of the business, we took no exception or shortcuts when it came to preparing for GDPR. Whether it meant hiring a data protection officer, expanding our privacy program or forming our own Data Protection Agreement, our primary goal is to instill customers with confidence that Sumo Logic has done everything it can to ensure compliance,” said George Gerchow, vice president of security and compliance at Sumo Logic. “We are pleased to be the highest-rated SaaS vendor by Netskope in terms of GDPR readiness, and view this as the next step on the never-ending road to providing best-in-class security and privacy for customers around the world.”

Netskope provides GDPR readiness ratings for enterprises based on its European Union GDPR Cloud-Readiness Compliance Checklist, with ratings tiered as Low, Medium, and High. However in September, the company released a report that found that the bulk of cloud services are not GDPR ready. Of those in use, only 24.6 percent received a GDPR-readiness rating of “high,” based on attributes such as location of where data is stored, level of encryption and data processing agreement specifics. This shows, despite the urgency and the potential for detrimental fines, cloud-based vendors either have yet to begin taking GDPR seriously, or do not understand its impact on their own organization.

Sumo Logic, a recognized expert in building and operating massive multi-tenant, highly distributed cloud systems, is the industry’s most secure cloud-native data analytics service providing customers with the highest level of compliance certifications to secure data in the cloud, including: PCI/DSS 3.2, SOC 2 Type 2, EU Privacy Shield, HIPAA-HITECH, ISO 27001, CSA STAR and more.
