Extract Metrics from Logs for High Performance Analytics
Brian Bozzello, Mike Lupiani

One of the biggest barriers to adopting a data analytics tool is the lack of real-time analytics to inform operational, security and business decisions. Metrics offer a fast and efficient way to monitor critical application and business KPIs, but many systems and applications are already instrumented to produce logs.

In this session, learn how Sumo Logic’s Logs-to-Metrics solution can help help you create metrics out of existing logs so you don't have to worry about creating them from scratch. By storing critical KPIs in Sumo's native time-series database instead of logs, you'll have access to 100x performance on dashboards and searches while maintaining your logs for root cause analysis.

Monitoring and Alerting for Distributed Systems at Sumo Scale
Gaurav Jain

With the increase in scale, it becomes a major challenge to monitor complex distributed systems such as the one at Sumo, and if not tackled methodically and systematically at the right time, it can become a time-sink for numerous dev hours. A customer-centric approach is key to finding the right balance between under-monitoring and over-monitoring of your application.

In this session, we will describe the success story of how at Sumo, we transitioned from almost ~ 30 pages/alerts per day to 2 pages per day, while at the same time keeping false positives and false negatives to the minimum. We will go through the hard questions that you have to answer, the knotty issues in cross-geo teams, tricky pitfalls, and the common mistakes made by dev/ops. We conclude with general guidelines that you can apply to your applications to make them more reliable and available.

Charles Abbott Senior Manager Medidata

Charles is a 10 year resident of Japan, where he has organized and supported Tokyo’s most active .NET and Ruby developer meetups. Perhaps unsurprisingly, he also spends most of his time at work organizing and supporting – two skills he aspires to improve. A developer at heart, but team leader by trade, he occasionally gets to code POCs before letting the Elixir, .NET, Ruby, or Scala experts in his teams reimagine the ideas to production. Charles holds an MBA and degree in Computer Science & Information Systems, but at Medidata he’s surrounded by keen technologists so he benefits from daily doses of this favorite aphorism: “the greatest obstacle to discovery is not ignorance — it is the illusion of knowledge.”

Mazen Ammar Senior Software Engineer Turo

Mazen joined Turo in 2016 and is currently a Senior Software Engineer on the Host team. He spent his first year at Turo on the Platform team leading their migration to Kubernetes, including implementing application and cluster logging with Sumologic.

David Andrzejewski Senior Engineering Manager Sumo Logic

David Andrzejewski is a Senior Engineering Manager at Sumo Logic, where he works on applying statistical modeling and analysis techniques to machine data such as logs and metrics. He also co-organizes the SF Bay Area Machine Learning meetup group. David holds a PhD in Computer Sciences from the University of Wisconsin–Madison.

Kenneth Barry Sales Engineer - Tools & Automation Sumo Logic

Kenneth Barry is a DevOps engineer focused on automation. At Sumo Logic he is charged with helping others understand the product, and building tools that enable his colleagues to do the same. He is an open-source advocate and enjoys developing non-traditional approaches to better solve problems.

CHRISTIAN BEEDGEN Co-founder and CTO Sumo Logic

As co-founder of Sumo Logic, Christian brings 15 years experience creating industry-leading enterprise software architecture. Christian played critical roles at ArcSight from 2001 through January 2010, most recently serving as Chief Architect for event-based products, ArcSight ESM and ArcSight Logger. He led development teams that built and delivered the core of the ArcSight product line across server infrastructure and user interaction. He designed and implemented the core backend event handling and object-relational mapping frameworks, and was integral in the design and development of core product features such as a flexible framework for real-time query processing. Christian also co-designed and implemented a patented approach to display large result sets that change dynamically. Prior to ArcSight, he was co-founder of Gigaton, an infrastructure software company enabling distributed file management solution over IP-enabled networks. Christian holds degrees from Humboldt University of Berlin and Fachhochschule Brandenburg.

Brian Bozzello Senior Product Manager Sumo Logic

Brian Bozzello is a Senior Product Manager focused on building solutions for monitoring and troubleshooting modern applications. At Sumo Logic, he is responsible for core capabilities such as dashboards, alerting and metrics. He holds a BS degree in Mechanical Engineering from Dartmouth College and an MBA from the MIT Sloan School of Management.

JEN BROWN Compliance & Data Protection Officer Sumo Logic

As Sumo Logic’s Compliance & Data Protection Officer Jen Brown brings over 20 years of experience in IT Security and Compliance.
