Incident Management with Sumo Logic at Informatica
Cloud Platform

The Informatica cloud platform is a collection of dozens of microservices spanning across ten+ teams and 5+ countries. When a production incident happens we use Sumo Logic for managing the incident to determine who are the affected services, updating the stakeholders/ trust site, troubleshooting the root cause analysis.

I will walk you through the dashboard templates we developed for each service as well as cross service key transactions that help us to manage those incidents and minimize to time to fix it.

We will use two real life incidents we had that caused serious downtime and how we improved.

Breakout Track
How to Effectively Monitor Kubernetes

Kubernetes is dominating the market as the leading orchestration tool. It removes many of the pain points that arise from managing, deploying and scaling your containerized microservices. However, Kubernetes is an application, and like all applications, it produces a wealth of machine data to give you visibility into Kubernetes and everything running inside of it.

In this session, we will show how Sumo Logic can provide you with a comprehensive view of your Kubernetes clusters and what is running inside and share some best practices for monitoring Kubernetes.

Breakout Track
Collecting at Scale

Collection strategies have evolved beyond tailing text files on disk. Modern applications send logs to cloud storage repositories like Amazon S3, stream them over Amazon Kinesis and Google Stackdriver, or emit logs directly from serverless platforms like Lambda. In this talk we will cover collecting at scale from multi-cloud environments, and how Sumo can help tame your deluge of data.

Breakout Track
Sumo Data Science Workflow

This session highlights where Sumo and Data Science meet. The Sumo Data Science workflow enables users working with log and metrics data sets in a notebook environment. Notebooks are commonly used for data exploration and model training. Sumo provides curated datasets through its query interface represented as data frames. These data frames are used in machine learning frameworks such as Spark or Pandas for powerful analytics.

Sumo New Security Solution: Rethinking the SIEM for Modern IT

Traditional SOC tools & models are struggling to adapt to IT transitions to cloud, new application architectures, and collaborative workflows. Sumo is developing new security solutions optimized for the leading edge of these transitions.

In this session you will see previews & demos of Sumo's new security analytics solution which includes unique investigation workflows & learning models, cloud scale correlation & context tracking, and integrated analytics. This solution rethinks the architecture, workflows, and content of traditional tools (SIEMs, etc.) to offer new Cloud delivered security solutions for modernizing IT.

Breakout Track
Incrementally Achieving DevSecOps

How does an enterprise go from a tradition “security at the end” model to integrating into all of your software pipelines?

This session will discuss just that - including the pipeline for your product or microservices as well as your machine images, infrastructure provisioning, identity automation, and more. This session will teach you how to focus on prioritization by taking a step back and assessing the situation by developing the right steps in your pipelines to incrementally improve each hour, day, or week.

Breakout Track
Extract Metrics from Logs for High Performance Analytics

One of the biggest barriers to adopting a data analytics tool is the lack of real-time analytics to inform operational, security and business decisions. Metrics offer a fast and efficient way to monitor critical application and business KPIs, but many systems and applications are already instrumented to produce logs.

In this session, learn how Sumo Logic’s Logs-to-Metrics solution can help help you create metrics out of existing logs so you don't have to worry about creating them from scratch. By storing critical KPIs in Sumo's native time-series database instead of logs, you'll have access to 100x performance on dashboards and searches while maintaining your logs for root cause analysis.

Breakout Track
Using Metrics to Enhance Monitoring and Troubleshooting

Monitoring and troubleshooting applications requires a comprehensive view of system health and application performance. You need to be proactively notified when something is wrong and quickly identify the root cause whether it's a poor end user experience or a server running out of memory.

In this session, learn how Metrics in Sumo can be leveraged as a fast, efficient way to monitor your system and application health and complement your log analysis strategy to reduce your overall troubleshooting time.

Breakout Track

We'll cover everything from the tools we use for monitoring and alerting to the strategies which not only drive down noise but provide multiple redundancies and instant coverage of new applications. Beyond the technical, learn of the strategies behind how we communicate and make business decisions during outages, the changes our organization has gone though and most importantly, the mistakes we've made and the biggest wins. This is the one talk that could save you millions!

Breakout Track
Monitoring and Alerting for Distributed Systems at Sumo Scale

With the increase in scale, it becomes a major challenge to monitor complex distributed systems such as the one at Sumo, and if not tackled methodically and systematically at the right time, it can become a time-sink for numerous dev hours. A customer-centric approach is key to finding the right balance between under-monitoring and over-monitoring of your application.

In this session, we will describe the success story of how at Sumo, we transitioned from almost ~ 30 pages/alerts per day to 2 pages per day, while at the same time keeping false positives and false negatives to the minimum. We will go through the hard questions that you have to answer, the knotty issues in cross-geo teams, tricky pitfalls, and the common mistakes made by dev/ops. We conclude with general guidelines that you can apply to your applications to make them more reliable and available.
