
For years, we’ve drawn this artificial line that equates observability with uptime, performance, and SRE dashboards, while security is about threats, alerts, SIEMs, and “bad things.”
While that separation was always convenient, it was never real.
The same logs that tell you your service is slow are the same ones that tell you it’s compromised. We just routed them to different teams, different tools, and different budgets, then acted surprised when neither side had the full picture.
The data was always the same
Pick almost any log line and you’ll see the problem instantly. For example, something like this:

Same log. Two completely different reactions.
Observability looks at this and sees a system problem. Why is one service hammering the refresh endpoint 1,800+ times? Did someone ship a bad retry loop? Is session handling broken? Who pushed code recently?
Security looks at the exact same line and goes somewhere else entirely. Why is a single source generating that much auth traffic? Why is it using a scripted user agent? Is this token replay, credential stuffing, or a compromised service trying to maintain access?
Same signal. Different interpretation.
The problem isn’t the data. It’s how we’ve segmented the responsibility for understanding it. We built two parallel universes—one optimized for debugging systems and one optimized for chasing attackers. Both are staring at the same telemetry, and neither one is complete without the other.
AI is breaking the illusion
AI doesn’t care about your org chart. It doesn’t care which team “owns” logs. Rather, it looks at patterns across everything (which is epic):
- Metrics
- Logs
- Traces
- Security signals
And it correlates them because that’s the only way to make sense of modern systems.
This is where things get uncomfortable for a lot of tooling. Because the moment you let AI operate across both observability and security data, you expose a hard truth: most platforms weren’t built to unify that data in the first place.
There are different schemas, pipelines, storage systems and query languages, so instead of getting insight, you get latency, translation errors, and partial context.
The gap is closing, but only if the architecture holds
AI can bridge observability and security if the underlying system is unified.
But if your logs, metrics, and security data live in different data lakes, vendors, and normalization layers, then AI doesn’t “connect” them; it guesses. Or as I like to call it, “liar, liar mainframe on fire.”
And guessing in security is how you end up with false positives nobody trusts and missed signals that actually mattered.
The platforms that win here aren’t the ones with the flashiest AI. They’re the ones where: data is already normalized, queries run fast, and context is shared across use cases.
Because then AI can reason over a complete picture.
The real shift
What’s happening right now isn’t “AI for security” or “AI for observability.” It’s the collapse of the boundary between them. And that forces a change in how you think about your stack:
- Logs aren’t “just logs” anymore.
- Telemetry isn’t “just performance data.”
- Security signals aren’t “just alerts.”
It’s all evidence. And the only question that matters is: Can your platform turn that evidence into answers fast enough to matter?
